RCC pushes for completion of 50-year-old Bolgatanga Sports Stadium

The Upper East Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ghana National Gas Company to secure support for the development of the long-abandoned Bolgatanga Sports Stadium.

The initiative is aimed at providing the region with a standard sports facility to promote youth development, talent identification and sporting activities.

Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, disclosed this during a citizen engagement session in Bolgatanga as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s “Resetting Ghana Agenda” tour of the region.

He said the RCC had submitted the required documents on the stalled project to the Sports Ministry for consideration.

“The region remains committed to using sports for youth development and talent identification,” he said.

The Bolgatanga Sports Stadium project dates back more than five decades but remains incomplete, with only a perimeter wall constructed.

The absence of a standard stadium has forced some football clubs in the region to use the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale or venues in the Bono East Region for their home matches.

This has increased their costs and limited opportunities to generate revenue from match-day activities.

The RCC believes completing the stadium will provide a permanent home for local clubs and enable the region to host major sporting competitions.

Atanga also said the RCC had supported a regional boxing competition involving athletes from the Upper East, Upper West and Northern regions, with outstanding boxers selected for national competitions.
