NorthCiti News Gets Result as Two-Year-Old Garbage Heap in Savelugu Gets Cleared

Residents of Kpatuli in the Savelugu Municipality of the Northern Region can now breathe a sigh of relief following the clearance of a garbage heap which they say had remained uncleared since 2024.
The clearance comes after the NorthCiti News team visited the area and reported concerns raised by residents over the worsening sanitation situation.
The residents who spoke to the news team expressed frustration over the failure to clear the heap, saying it posed a threat to their health and exposed them to sanitation-related diseases.
They also complained about the lack of a public toilet facility, which they said, coupled with the garbage heap had made Kpatuli one of the dirtiest areas in the municipality.
One of the residents told NorthCiti News that repeated complaints to the relevant authorities had not yielded any results.
“The rubbish heap has been left uncleared for about two years now. This situation is worrying and the Municipal Assembly needs to step in and clear this heap,” he said.
He added, “We have lodged complaints on several occasions to the stakeholders involved. However, nothing has been done about it.”
The resident further said the situation exposed residents to diseases, including cholera and malaria.
The Assembly Member for the Kpatuli Electoral Area, Abdul Rahaman Aswad, also expressed concern over the situation. He said he had raised the matter at several Assembly meetings but was yet to see the garbage cleared.
Mr. Aswad called on the Savelugu Municipal Chief Executive, Alhassan Fuseini Bagaman, to intervene, saying, “My people are really displeased with the Assembly’s lackadaisical attitude towards the clearance of this heap.”
Following the NorthCiti News team’s visit, the Savelugu Municipal Chief Executive, Alhassan Fuseini Bagaman, visited the area on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and the garbage heap was subsequently cleared.
Speaking after the exercise, the MCE said plans were far advanced to clear all eleven dumping sites within the municipality.
He attributed the delay to the rainy season, explaining that the heavy machines being used for the exercise cannot operate effectively on soft ground.

Mr. Bagaman said, “The DRIP machines used for the clearance need harder ground to operate, and so when the ground gets harder, we shall clear all other outstanding sites.”
He also disclosed that the Assembly was engaging the Municipal Environmental Health Officer to begin a sensitization and public education campaign on the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal.
The MCE said, “The Assembly is working on its by-laws on sanitation, and residents who flout the laws shall be punished.”
Mr. Bagaman reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to improving development and sanitation in the Savelugu Municipality.
He said, “We will bring about a difference in the development of Savelugu. That is my commitment.”
